Ylang Ylang is a popular essential oil that boasts many potential healing properties. It has a sweet somewhat jasmine-like fragrance from its exotic flower, Cananga orderata. The properties of oils found in plants such as Ylang Ylang may enhance the health and mood of its users. Essential oils are obtained from the plant through a distillation process and are an enhanced, concentrated version of the plant’s natural healing properties.
Blood Sugar: Ylang Ylang may help to balance blood sugar levels by supporting the pancreas. The oil can be applied topically in a dilution over the pancreatic region of the abdomen for absorption. This can encourage the absorption of insulin into the bloodstream.
Antiseptic Properties: This essential oil is a powerful component of aromatherapy and perfumery alike. Ylang Ylang is known for its potential anti-fungal and antiseptic properties. A few drops of the essential oil of the plant can be applied directly to the wound to help prevent infections from bacteria or viruses. It is also one of the more potent plant oils used topically on the scalp for ridding oneself of head lice.
Blood Pressure: Inhaling the essential oil in a diffuser may lower blood pressure, according to a study published in 2012, in the journal “Evidence-Based Complementary and Alternative Medicine.” Ylang Ylang is thought to target hypertension by introducing a calming chemical known as sesquiterpenes. This chemical promotes a restful sleep due to natural esters in the oil. These natural esters are also found in similar essential oils, such as lavender and sweet marjoram. Ylang Ylang contains high levels of these esters and has a rich floral aroma that creates a calming atmosphere.
For Cleaning: Ylang Ylang also contains properties that may aid in cleaning your home. The natural alcohols in the oil make it an excellent, great smelling cleansing solution when several drops are combined with distilled water or vinegar.
