Wow! Do you know how many grandchildren are living with their grandparents? According to the Census Bureau updates of statistics about grandparents role and responsibilities in our society… National Grandparents Day 2013: Sept. 8 “In 1970, Marian McQuade initiated a campaign to establish a day to honor grandparents. In 1978, President Jimmy Carter signed a federal proclamation, declaring the first Sunday after Labor Day as National Grandparents Day. This day has been celebrated every year since in honor of our nation’s grandparents. 7 million The number of grandparents whose grandchildren under age 18 were living with them in 2011.” Source: U.S. Census Bureau, 2011 American Community Survey, We want to give a shout out to all the grandparents out there loving up on their grandkids and we also want to give an extra special big “Wooohooo” to those grandparent who have, for one reason or another, taken a key role in raising their grandchildren. Extended family, especially grandparents,add an element of wisdom, respect and honor to a family that can offer a guiding light to the family heritage. Many have made sacrifices that have helped catapult the family legacy. It is the responsibility of the generations after to continue building upon that foundation. National Grandparent’s Day is a time we take to honor those grandparents for all they have done before and for us or for simply making it possible for us to be here, living at this moment. So how can you show love for your grandparents this weekend? 1. Visit: Many grandparents just want time with the family. Grandparents want to hug you, talk to you and simply just look at you. There is so much joy and golden jewels that can be shared as they tell stories of their lives and the family unit before and after you’ve came along. You just may find out what you do or are interested in has been a gift in the family generations back. If they are no longer living on their own, visits are very important. Be sure to check onthem regularly and help out. Your grandparents may love to go out and get away from the everyday routine. The word ‘focus’ is often used in the context of success. We’re told, for example, that highly successful people are better focused than the rest of us. We hear stories about athletes or sports people who are totally focused. Surely, if either you or I could get some of this focus, at the very least, our lives would be the better for it. We might not end up being world-beaters – we may not even want to be world-beaters – but a little focus, a bit more success and a lot of happiness wouldn’t go astray!! So, what is focus?
