One of our wonderful Advice Nurses! GLUCOSE TOLERANCE TESTING DURING PREGNANCY Some women become temporarily diabetic during pregnancy, due to effects of heredity, age, diet, weight, and hormones. “Gestational Diabetes” is dangerous if not identified and controlled, and associated with  several pregnancy complications, including high blood pressure and pre-eclampsia.  If uncontrolled, diabetes can cause a baby to be abnormally large and difficult to deliver, so babies born to diabetic moms have more risks of birth trauma, and unstable blood sugar as newborns.  The good news is that when identified in time, Gestational Diabetes ( or “GDM”)  can usually be managed with diet and monitoring blood sugar.  If blood sugars and weight gain are kept in control, the risks are reduced tremendously.  GDM not controlled with diet can sometimes requires medication, and if severe, physician management. Between the 26th and 28th week of pregnancy you will do a two-hour diagnostic test forgestational diabetes. This test is very important due to potential effects on the management of your pregnancy. This 2-hour test requires you to be fasting. Please do not eat or chew gum for 8 hours prior to your arrival….but you may drink water!  Stay hydrated! After a fasting blood level is drawn, you will be given the glucola drink.   It tastes like flat soda!  Your blood will be collected one hour after you finish the drink and again two hours later.  You may want to bring a protein-rich snack to eat as soon as the test is done. Please be advised this is a two-hour test, during which you should remain in our office.   During the time at the office, most women also have their midwife visit.  It’s also a good time to make appointments for the rest of the pregnancy.  After 28 weeks, you come see us every 2 weeks! Along with testing your glucose level we will be testing your blood iron and platelet levels and sending a urine culture. If you are Rh negative you will also have anantibody screen drawn prior to your RhoGAM injection at 28 weeks.  Results of this test come back the next day.  We’ll call if there are any abnormal results. has 3 , located in Lansdowne, Ashburn/Broadlands, and Berryville, VA.
