Life Threatening Blood Sugar Levels

Type 1 vs. Type 2 Diabetes

While similar, Type 1 and Type 2 Diabetes are two distinct conditions. Let’s examine the differences between the two.

Type I Diabetes

(formerly known as Juvenile Diabetes) currently affects only 5% of all diabetes sufferers. Usually, it is diagnosed in children and young adults. While the exact cause of the disease is unknown, many individuals’ own immune system destroys the insulin-producing cells in the pancreas. This results in body’s inability to correctly process and convert starches, sugars and other foods into energy. Genetics, viruses and other environmental factors may trigger the onset of the disease. Symptoms typically set in very quickly.

Though there is currently no cure, talking to a healthcare professional and taking action with such practices as exercise, diet monitoring and other treatments, can allow those with Type 1 Diabetes to learn to manage their condition in time and live well and actively.

Type 2 Diabetes

(previously Adult-Onset Diabetes) typically sets in later in life and the symptoms develop slowly. In this kind of diabetes, the body does continue to produce insulin, however, it may not produce enough and may develop insulin resistance or no longer process the hormone properly; sometimes both. Occasionally, when the body becomes insulin-resistant, the pancreas may increase the amount of insulin produced to attempt to restore the body to its normal levels and achieve balance. This results in the yo-yoing of blood sugar levels.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for Type 2 Diabetes; but by seeking the assistance of a healthcare professional experienced in dealing with chronic conditions, like Dr. Crockett at Zeal Integrated Healthcare in Springfield Mo, it is possible to learn to manage your diabetes.

Our patients have seen successes leading to a reduction and — occasionally — reversal of the condition and its symptoms. By taking a holistic, managed care approach to the disease; looking at the whole picture of you, it can be possible to manage Type 2 Diabetes without excessive medication.
