ST. LOUIS, MO. (KTVI)- Breakfast is often considered the most important meal of the day.

According to , studies have shown people who take time to eat a healthy morning meal consume fewer calories over the course of the day, have stronger cognitive skills and are 30 percent less likely to be overweight or obese.

Katie Lambert, MS, RD, LD, a Barnes-Jewish Hospital dietitian, was in this studio this morning to point out the worst breakfast foods and to explain how to make healthier choices.

Skipping breakfast has many cons, especially for those with type 2 diabetes. New research suggests that it worsens blood glucose or blood sugar control. It increases post-meal blood sugars after lunch and dinner in people with type 2 diabetes.

Eating a well-rounded diet means you are more productive, especially when you start your day with breakfast. Many breakfast items contain protein, fiber or both. A healthy breakfast can also add nutrients such as calcium, iron and B vitamins.
