In order to service children in grades they were not reaching in the classroom, St. Christopher’s decided to create this program in order to have a broader reach. The program is designed for teachers to use as supplements to lessons in math, reading, science and writing skills via oral health literacy activity sheets. During this Oral Health America webinar, presenters will compare the value of oral health “live” presentations to the value of electronically distributed oral health activities. Of low income children, less than half of thesechildren receive any dental service in a given year. They face barriers to access such as: inadequate provider participation in Medicaid; transportation; literacy and cultural barriers between families and providers; and families’ low awareness of Medicaid dental benefits and preventive oral health care guidelines. Prompted by the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) Oral Health Initiative, state Medicaid agencies have been making efforts to improve the oral health of child beneficiaries. A critical component of their progress has been collaboration – both among stakeholders within a given state and across states. During this Oral Health America webinar, presenters will share examples of state strategies for improving oral health care access, highlighting specific collaborative efforts by the seven states that participated in the Center for Health Care Strategies’ Medicaid Oral Health Learning Collaborative from 2013-2015. The goal of infection prevention and control is to prevent healthcare-associated infections in patients and injuries and illnesses among personnel. Currently, the recommended practices in the CDC Guidelines for Infection Control in Dental Healthcare Settings – 2003 are the recognized minimum standard throughout the United States. The CDC dental guideline states, “The recommended infection control practices are applicable to all settings in which dental treatment is provided.” In an effort to increase access to oral healthcare, the traditional care delivery system is being unbundled to bring care to populations where they reside, attend school or gather in community settings. These programs use portable and mobile equipment that may present newchallenges and considerations for infection prevention and control. This webinar will address the current CDC infection prevention guidelines including considerations for portable and mobile oral healthcare settings. After you’ve completed the webinar, contact Tyler Brown at for more info. The epidemiological data from manycountries indicates a global increase in dental caries in children and adults. Dr. Barry Hopper recognized the importance of this issue and has created a disposable brush pre-pasted with Xylitol toothpaste. Dr. Hopper decided to conduct a study at a small school in Eastern Tennessee where he would ask the young students to brush their teeth after lunch with his provided toothbrush. The purpose of his study was to determine if children in a school setting would accept an after lunch brushing program and if such program would be effective in reducing plaque. The students, principal, and the staff readily accepted the concept and were very cooperative and appreciative. The reduction in plaque levels was dramatic, proving the toothbrushes a success. Tune in as Dr. Hopper, along with Dr. Sharon Pickering, go in depth about this valuable study as well as the information they’ve gained from it. Presenters: Dr. Barry L. Presenter: Connie Kugel, RDH, BS Professional Relations and Marketing Manager Pulpdent Corporation SAA Webinar: March 25, 2015 The New Drink Pyramid The original USDA Food Pyramid taught Americans how to make healthy food choices, but was silent on the issue of drink choices. Over time, that original pyramid (which proved effective in lowering saturated fat and cholesterol consumption and decreased US death rates for heart disease)evolved into the MyPlate icon, and for the first time, included a drink. The blue liquid in the cup simply says, “Dairy,” leaving much room for interpretation, and giving little instruction on other choices. So, what should we drink? How much? How often? The new, simple, straightforward, colorful, and fun “Drink Pyramid” gives some clear answers. Using pictures and mnemonic clues, it is easy to understand and to remember, even for children. Decreasing consumption of sugar sweetened beverages is paramount to the commitment to improve nutrition. In two pilot studies with Kentucky elementary school children, 80-90% of 1st and 3rd graders remembered every tier of the Drink Pyramid after only seeing it once, and drink choices and behaviors were improved, with children drinking more water and less soda pop. A new website includes information about the new Drink Pyramid as well as curriculum that can be used in educational campaigns.
