It found that a lack of sleep links to increased obesity and much of which occurs in adults. A small number of participants took part in the study where they were placed on very strict diets and limited to only four and a half hours sleep during the night.

Only after four nights, the moderators found that the fat cells of the participants developed a decreased sensitivity to insulin, a chemical which regulates blood sugar levels and metabolism. The persistence of this insulin can lead to weight gain, diabetes and heart related diseases. Despite the small size of study participants the conclusions are sobering. Additional and more expansive studies are ongoing however that fact that subjects showed such dramatic changes after just a few nights of sleep deprivation, they are nonetheless sobering.

One of the leads authors involved in the study stated, “This is the equivalent of metabolically aging someone 10 to 20 years just from four night of partial sleep restriction”. According to the latest research from the Centre of Control, Disease & Prevention in the US, more than 50 million adults suffer from sleep disorder related illnesses. On a more expansive scale, most Americans don’t get the daily recommended seven to eight hours sleep at night. The rise in obesity according to the above study would definitely explain why so many are overweight and suffer from other illnesses caused by lack of sleep.

Josiane Broussard, Ph.D., one of the study authors said: “For long term health, you have to protect your sleep,”. She also stated that: “This study, while small, offers an important clue about the function of sleep and why sleep deprivation leaves us more vulnerable to Type 2 diabetes.”
