How Are Blood Sugar Levels Maintained During Exercise

What is Hypoglycemia?

Hypoglycemia happens when your blood sugar falls too low.

Hypoglycemia is a blood sugar level of less than 4.0 mmol/L.

Signs and Symptoms of Hypoglycemia

The most common reasons for severe hypoglycemia are not recognizing the following Symptoms of hypoglycemia:

• Shakiness

•  Sweating

• Hunger

• Mood Changes

• Nausea

• Dizziness

• Weakness

• Difficulty Concentrating

• Headache

• Blurred Vision

• Confusion

• Extreme tiredness

Why should we Recognise and Treat Hypoglycemia?

If not treated immediately, the level of glucose may fall to such levels that make patients become confused or can even cause them to pass out.

How to Prevent Hypoglycemia.

Regular blood glucose testing is extremely important to know what your blood glucose is.

Eating healthy meals at regular times.

Regular exercise.

Hypoglycemia Treatment Tips

1) Test your blood sugar.

2) Take 15 g of a fast acting carbohydrate such as

*15 g of glucose in the form of glucose tablets

*3 teaspoons of sugar dissolved in water

*6 Life Savers (2.5 grams of carbohydrate each)

*1 tablespoon (15 ml) of honey

3) Wait 15 minutes and retest your blood glucose again.

If it is still less than 4.0 mmol/L, treat again

4) Once this episode of Hypoglycemia has passed,

eat your next meal at its regular time.

If your next meal is more than 1 hour away, eat a snack that contains 15 grams of carbohydrate such as:

* 1 slice of bread

* 1/2 cup of cereal

* 7 crackers

and protein such as:

* 1 piece of cheese

* 1/4 cup of nuts

* 2 tablespoons of peanut butter

Is Everyone at Risk of getting Hypoglycemia?

Anyone taking insulin or diabetes medication that causes the pancreas to release more insulin are at risk for Hypoglycemia.
