High Blood Sugar Levels Even With Insulin

Thinking of the internal organs in isolation, one may not suspect loss of oxygen to be one a major factor in kidney disease. But the interconnection of bodily systems means that a problem starting in one organ can have far-reaching and surprising effects in others. A lack of oxygen is one problem that can begin with the kidneys, but go on to affect the lungs and brain as well.

Kidneys produce a hormone callederythropoietin that signals the production of red blood cells. If the kidneys are failing, they create less of this hormone, meaning the body produces lower numbers of these cells. And since those cells carry oxygen, the body eventually suffers fromanemia, a lack of oxygen.

Frequently Asked Questions QUESTION: MRI+hypertension.? Hey all, im going in for an MRI at the end of next week. Now, when I was at the Kidney Disease and Hypertension doctor today, I felt confident in what he said, thinking I knew the true meaning of MRI. But evidently I was wrong. Basically Im on my 6th new BP medicine, none are working, and kidneys came back pretty much sound through the ultrasound and the blood/urine tests. So he has ruled that out. My bp averages (wore the 24hrmonitors already) around 180′s/110′s, even on the different medicines. Basically he said he was going to give me an MRI to check me out, but isn’t that just checking out muscles? What would this have to do in finding the cause for the BP? I keep going for all these tests, but so far none have found my BP answers yet, and I feel its really taking a toll on my leaking heart valves, and the chest pains keep getting worse weekly. But, my cardiologist wont give me a stress test until my BP lowers a bit for my ownsaftey. ANSWER: QUESTION: MRI for hypertension? Hey all, im going in for an MRI at the end of next week. But, my cardiologist wont give me a stress test until my BP lowers a bit for my own saftey.Mitral and triscupid valve showed minor leakage. Pulmonary valve showed moderate amount of leakage. Cardiologists (been to three now) have been jerking my chain because of my age (21) Kind of getting sick of it, because they are obviously more concerned about their older patients, but w/e evidently none of them around here care. And if I hear one more cardiologist or doctor say “oh your far to young to have heart problems” im really going to snap haha. Not even close to obese, actually in great physical condition untill this all happened and even now, im still not bad by no means. No smoking, and occasional drinking, maybe once a month, or once every two months. No drugs either. I walk a total of at least 2-3 miles a day as well. ANSWER: There are many things that can parade as primary hypertension but are really a secondary source that can explain why your Bp may not respond to conventional meds. Renovascular hypertension Primary aldosteronism Pheochromocytoma HypothyroidismHyperthyroidism Hyperparathyroidism Depending on what your doc is scanning, he may be looking for some or all of these things to explain your BP. Other factors can be obesity, sleep apnea, alcohol intake, smoking, etc. A leaky heart valve is a whole other issue– which valve? Some heart/valve issues can effect BP, too. Good luck, read some medical journals, you are your own best advocate! Chest pain getting worse should be evaluated, if you can’t tolerate a stress test then they should cath (cardiac catheterization) you (if they haven’t already). QUESTION: What are the symtoms of a flu shot? On Oct 24, my husband and i got our flu shots. The next day my shoulder was in pain but it went away. Today(Oct 27) my husband woke up saying he didn’t feel well and that he was throwing up so he went back to bed. Is this one of the symtoms? I am a diabetic and my husband has some medical condtions. He has a kidney disease, renial hypertension, neural hypertension. ANSWER: It causes all sorts ofproblems, long and short term. Do NOT get vaccinated. A vaccinated person is MORE likely to get a disease than a non-vaccinated person. The whole theory of vaccination is flawed. It causes a weakening of the immune system thus making those who are innoculated more susceptible to disease. There are so many awful side effects to vaccination that it should be considered extremely dangerous. Just sit back and think for a while. Is there any sense in injecting a disease directly into your body. We have been subjected to an awful mind control program to enable the drug manufacturers to make a fortune. The Vaccination Hoax If you go to the vaccination liberation web page, at You will find all the forms necessary to provide exemption for your child. If you want to study the history of vaccination, see QUESTION: Kidneys….? I go back to the kidney disease & hypertension doctor on Thursday, but darn, these past two days the front, sides and back around the kidney area have become quite swollen andbeat red. Sort of hurts to walk and move around, almost like there is a shifting weight rotating around that area. Anyone know what could be causing this? I mean, I just started going to this guy, so im basically clueless as to whats going on becuase he just started taking tests, without any kind of diagnoses yet. Hopefully Ill find that out on Thursday. Also, does anyone know what the possible reason was for him taking a 24 hour urine sample from me, and 7 viles of blood? What exactly does that test for? Also, why is he always look at my finger tips and my ankles, im sure its to look for swelling, but every time, thats one of the first things he checks. Xray and Ultrasound. Said nothing seemed out of the ordinary incept for they were somewhat enlarged. ANSWER: maybe a kidney infection or stones did they xray ? QUESTION: My cat’s kidney disease? I have a 12 year old cat whom I love a lot. My wife thinks that since the new year he has been drinking and peeing a lot otherwise she thoughtmaybe he had an occasional bad day but he was acting his normal self otherwise. September 2009 his blood work including thyroid levels were all normal (March 2009 he had a successful partial thyroidectomy). So I took him to the vet 2 weeks ago. I ended up going to a new vet who is across the street rather than his usual vet because he hates car rides. The vet just did a cursory exam and drew some blood and gave him his Rabies and distemper shots. The BUN Creatinine came back high and she said that this was chronic renal failure. All other blood work including sugar and thyroid were normal. When I asked for a workup for the cause she said it did not matter as the treatment is the same. She scheduled him for admission the following Monday for IV fluids. He rapidly deteriorated so last Friday night we rushed him to the ED of the hospital where his regular vet works. His BUN/Cr were worse so they admitted him and did IV fluids. They found no evidence of hypertension, no anemia even afterhydration, normal kidneys on U/S and Xray, and no proteinuria (culture is still pending). He responded very well to 4 days of IV fluids (Cr came down from 9 to 5 and BUN from 135 to 56) and he was sent home with enalapril, antibiotics and sq fluids /- renal diet. He is due to go back next Wednesday for blood work. Now since he is an indoor cat with no exposure to toxins or infection my wife (a “human” dermatologist) thinks that he indeed has chronic renal failure, because of the 6 months of drinking and peeing, that was exacerbated by the distemper shot. The Vets at the hospital think this is something acute given normal BP, hct, U/S and Xray of kidneys. Can a cat have chronic renal failure and have no hypertension, anemia and normal kidneys on both XRay and U/S? Can a cat be exposed to a UTI causing bacteria or a toxin in the house without ever going out? The reason I ask is if he does have chronic renal failure it is going to be very hard for him to get the sq fluids every day. Hehates it and i don’t want to put him through that. ANSWER: QUESTION: Do I have Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD)? Hi everyone, I’m a 20 years old male. No smoking/drinking problem or anything like that. Recently though (~3 or 4 months back) I noticed that my blood pressure was on the higher side of normal, around 138/90. I exercised quite a bit after and thought that should have subsided. However starting earlier this month I had this strange metallic taste in my mouth always. It felt like the water I was drinking was a little rusty (but it wasn’t). Also, I started becoming really lazy/tired in the morning, and yesterday found out I lost 10 kg in the past 4 months, from 70 kg to 60.5 kg. (Although the last 2 points might be because my eating pattern was really bad during university semester, and didn’t feel like eating) I started checking for CKD “signs” on the internet, and it seems all the above points match exactly. As for urine signs, I think mine is a little foamy but it might be justnormal. I don’t have swelling or skin itching, or nausea/vomiting, or shortness of breath. I sometimes have weakness in the knees but that’s usually if I didn’t sleep for 2 days and it’s probably not kidney-related. Nevertheless, the rusty taste, pre-hypertension (and possibly the weight loss and fatigue) seem to all point to CKD. I really hope I’m not getting this condition as it’s said to be irreversible damage that could only get worse.. Could anyone please shed some light towards this matter, thanks! ANSWER: QUESTION: Does anyone have personal experience with the H1N1 vaccine? Has anyone had the vaccine or your children had it? Did it harm you in any way? fever, sickness, etc? I have some severe health problems (DM, hypertension, cardiovascular disease, kidney function issues), and I have the opportunity to have the injected vaccine. I am afraid to do it, but I am afraid not to do it. Has anyone had any personal experience with the vaccine? Your personal experiences would reallyhelp me decide to have or not have it. I understand your opinions based on propaganda on both sides of the issue, but I am looking for real experiences not just opinions. I would just like to live through the epidemic and not die from the shot or the flu. Thank you so very much. If I did not have severe underlying medical conditions, I wouldn’t even consider getting the vaccine due to the risk. But I’m on the fence about this. ANSWER: I am in a priority group for the H1N1 vaccine (under age 64 with cardiovascular disease, including stent and pacemaker and history of heart attack), and I had the shot 4 days ago, with NO REACTION WHATEVER. I got it not just for me, but for my family members, a couple of whom cannot have any kind of flu shot but who are at high risk of complications from flu. I figure that anytime I have the chance to stay healthy and not spread germs to others, it is something I will do unless and until my physicians tell me otherwise. And by the way, there has been NOnews here in Central Illinois about anybody having any adverse reactions at all to the vaccine. I wouldn’t hesitate if I were you, but you might give your doctor’s office a call if that would make you feel better. QUESTION: Has anyone adopted a special needs pet? I would love to hear anyone’s stories about their pet. They are the most special, appreciative, grateful pets to ever get. I had a special needs dog for 23 months. He was about 7 years old and had heartworm, a tumor, and lyme disease. As the months went by, we cured the heartworm, but never knew what damaging effects it would have. He developed heart disease, lung disease, kidney disease, and pulmonary hypertension. He was saved by his doctors and lived 50 more days after he collapsed and was in heart failure. It is the saddest thing to witness your loved one dealing with such obstacles, but my dog was the best thing that ever happened to me. Without a doubt, I would adopt another special needs pet. I am not saying they arethe most deserving of a home, but they are looked down upon because no one wants to deal with the medical stress and emotional stress. I am willing to deal with all of that again to save an animals life. My dog would’ve died in the shelter if we didn’t adopt him. The shelter was extremely grateful for us adopting him and after all the thousands of pets that go through their shelter, they remembered my dog and knew how special he was. When he was in the hospital of heart failure, all of the staff at the shelter came up to us and told us how special he was and how he touched their hearts. Does anyone else have an “special” stories about their pet? I would love to hear any stories. ANSWER: I have had 9 cats in my life. This is a sad story but one close to my heart. One of my many foster cats, Chanel, hadn’t been looking so good. After weeks, we were sure she was sick with something, but we didn’t know what it was. So we took her to the veterinarian down the street and he checked her. Itturns out she had been abused, shot. When I heard the news I cried for a long time. We ended up having to put the cat to sleep. I miss my little Chanel! QUESTION: This cant be good blood pressure….? Just took my BP again today and got 184/107. Ive been on meds for it since November, and still nothing Obviously eating healthy and getting enough fitness, but still wont go down. They put me on a 24 hour bpmonitor, and my avg was 171/106. But, the cardiologist doesnt know how this is happening or whats causing it. He noted I had minor valve leakage in my mitral and triscupid valve, and mild leakage in my pulmonary valve. He says its very common with people and that im far to young for anything like this to worry about at my age (21). Im always getting chest pains, out of breathe, and occasional fainting, but he wont do nothing for me. The kidney disease and hypertension doctor just took 7 viles of blood, and a 24 hour jug of urine from me, I wont find out for a few weeks, but anyone knowtires/rubber/plastic, refined grains, soft water, galvanized pipes, dental alloys, candy, ceramics, electroplating fertilizers, paints, motor oil and motor exhaust. Symptoms and DIseases: Alopecia, anemia, arthritis, cancer, lung disease, cerebral hemorrhage, cirrhosis of the liver, enlarged heart, diabetes, emphysema, hypoglycemia, hypertension, impotence, infertility, kidney disease, learning disorders, migraines, inflammation, renal disease, osteoporosis, schizophrenia, strokes, vascular disease, high cholesterol, growth is impaired, cardiovascular disease, Also, does nickle engenders kidney failure? There’s the link, ANSWER: It is true that our environment is polluted there are people who will be affected just as many animals have been affected by the same pollutants. So we see many fish today which are born with malformed genitalia, deformed fins, extra fins, etc., because they are poisoned by the hormones from the female contraceptive pills which are discharged with the sewageinto rivers and sea. But it is equally true, if the evolutionist are right, that some who are the “fitter” will adapt to the heavy metals, radio-nuclides, hormones, dioxin, poisons, etc., in our environment and go on to produce stronger and fitter stock. e.g. humans with extra fingers, bigger (or smaller) brain, bisexuals who can cope better in our liberal society, etc. So there is really no need to worry. In the long run, evolution will sort it out as it has always been doing. Volcanoes, for example, spewed out poisons and killed off many life forms, but some survive and after millions of years these repopulated the earth. Meteors and comets smashing into our earth brought their heavy metals and other life forms (viruses and bacteria) and probably killed off many earth life, but at the same time brought enduring mutations. The process keeps going on and it gets sorted out. Even global hotification. QUESTION: Living with multiple illnesses (fibromyalgia, PKD and others). Peoplesthoughts on living ……? with illness like these. I’m young (34) and have more health issues then someone that is 75. I find it frustrating and draining to deal with everything. I was wondering if people have some thoughts of what you can do to live with the illness i have. Below is a partial list of my illnesses: ~ Fibromyalgia ~ Polycystic Kidney Disease a.k.a (with Hypertension) ~ Barrett’s Esophagus ~ arthritis ~ Chronic Depression to name a few. I also have a husband that suffers with Degenerative disc disease, my Children (13 & 10) have the PKD that they inherited from me. Please share your thoughts on how you Live/deal with any of the above illness. Thanks ANSWER: My personal background of chronic pain: endometriosis (have had two surgeries for it so far) and fibromyalgia (since 1995). The fibro wasn’t diagnosed until 1999, and before it was i was misdiagnosed with a number of things; one of the misdiagnoses was a potentially fatal autoimmune disorder. I was 23 when that happened, and spent a good six to eight months believing that my life was going to be Shorter and More Miserable than the lives of the people around me. When i found out that what i had was Not A Fatal Condition, it was very much a life-changing event. I had tried a number of highly ineffective coping mechanisms, from alcohol to denial. Eventually i came to realize that this chronic pain is a hidden blessing. I know this sounds completely and totally cheesy, but hear me out. People like you and me have to plan out every single moment of our day. If our hands aren’t working right, we wear clothes with zippers instead of buttons. That sort of thing. When we get home from being out (be it work, errands, a walk in the park, whatever), we have to choose between spending time with loved ones (or relaxing by ourselves in some fashion) and going to lie down from exhaustion. Sounds pretty crappy on the surface, i know. But wait for it, it gets better. We live our lives having to make conscious,minute-by-minute decisions regarding our quality of life. While it certainly can be a whopping huge pain in the neck sometimes, it makes us more aware of those little moments… both good and bad. It means that time spent with loved ones is a Choice, not Just Because. We =choose= the lives we have. I’ve compared notes with friends who do not have chronic pain issues, and found that most of them don’t understand what it’s like to truly appreciate the Little Moments in life. Moreover, they seem almost oblivious to them. This is not necessarily true of everyone who has a pain-free daily life… but it’s not entirely uncommon. I’ve also learned that largely, life is what you make it. I’ve wasted no small amount of time moping about the daily pain that travels (and yet it just won’t leave!) all over my body with no relief, no respite. I can choose to let it get to me, or i can choose to make the best of what i have. I have to fight more for the things i get, but it makes those things that muchsweeter. I can choose to cry about my back going out, or i can find ways to joke and laugh about it. I can’t tell you how many chiropractors i’ve confused by doing just that! I know it probably sounds hokey, and for that i apologize. But i promise you it’s all true. I can only type so much before my hands hurt, and i have =chosen= to type out this huge long thing for you… that’s how much it means to me. This life is full of things that we are given, and it’s up to use to make the most of them. No one else is going to make our lives Worth It if we don’t do it ourselves. Medical Benefits ofRamadan by Shahid Athar, M.D. Most Muslims do not fast because of medical benefits but because it has been ordained to them in the Quran. The medical benefits of fasting are as a result of fasting. Fasting in general has been used in medicine for medical reasons including weight management, for rest of the digestive tract and for lowering lipids. There are many adverse effects of total fasting as well as so-called crash diets. Islamic fasting is different from such diet plans because in Ramadan fasting, there is no malnutrition or inadequate calorie intake. The caloric intake of Muslims during Ramadan is at or slightly below the national requirement guidelines. In addition, the fasting in Ramadan is voluntarily taken and is not a prescribed imposition from the physician. Ramadan is a month of self-regulation and self-training, with the hope that this training will last beyond the end of Ramadan. If the lessons learned during Ramadan, whether in terms of dietary intake or righteousness, are carried on after Ramadan, it is beneficial for one’s entire life. Moreover, the type of food taken during Ramadan does not have any selective criteria of crash diets such as those which are protein only or fruit only type diets. Everything that is permissible is taken in moderate quantities. The only difference between Ramadan and total fasting is the timing of the food; during Ramadan, we basically miss lunch and take an early breakfast and do not eat until dusk. Abstinence from water during this period is not bad at all and in fact, it causes concentration of all fluids within the body, producing slight dehydration. The body has its own water conservation mechanism; in fact, it has been shown that slight dehydration and water conservation, at least in plant life, improve their longevity. The physiological effect of fasting includes lower of blood sugar, lowering of cholesterol and lowering of the systolic blood pressure. In fact, Ramadan fasting would be an ideal recommendationfor treatment of mild to moderate, stable, non-insulin diabetes, obesity and essential hypertension. In 1994 the first International Congress on “Health and Ramadan”, held in Casablanca, entered 50 research papers from all over the world, from Muslim and non-Muslim researchers who have done extensive studies on the medical ethics of fasting. While improvement in many medical conditions was noted; however, in no way did fasting worsen any patients’ health or baseline medical condition. On the other hand, patients who are suffering from severe diseases, whether diabetes or coronary artery disease, kidney stones, etc., are exempt from fasting and should not try to fast. There are psychological effects of fasting as well. There is a peace and tranquility for those who fast during the month of Ramadan. Personal hostility is at a minimum, and the crime rate decreases. Muslims take advice from the Prophet who said, “If one slanders you or aggresses against you, say I am fasting.’” Thispsychological improvement could be related to better stabilization of blood glucose during fasting as hypoglycemia after eating, aggravates behavior changes. There is a beneficial effect of extra prayer at night. This not only helps with better utilization of food but also helps in output. There are 10 extra calories output for each rikat of the prayer. Again, we do not do prayers for exercise, but a mild movement of the joints with extra calorie utilization is a better form of exercise. Similarly, recitation of the Quran not only produces a tranquility of heart and mind, but improves the memory. Therefore, I encourage my Muslim patients to fast in the month of Ramadan, but they must do it under medical supervision. Healthy adult Muslims should not fear becoming weak by fasting, but instead it should improve their health and stamina. ANSWER: That was very interesting. I worked for four years in an Elementary school as an EMT. We had many Muslim students. Being children they spent a lotof time in my office during their lunch hour complaining they were hungry and or had headaches. I felt for them, after all they are just children and felt embarrassed in front of their peers. It was very rare that any student was happy with the idea of fasting – but they all survived. As a Catholic, I too have days of fasting and it drives my kids crazy. They too survive. QUESTION: My father died of a sudden heart attack in his home….I cannot get over this REGRET I am feeling….? I should have gotten him LIFE ALERT and he could have pressed it and been saved. He was 76 years old. He had several health problems including diabetes (controlled), hypertension (controlled), stage 4 kidney disease, and atrial fibrillation (controlled by digoxin). He had two strokes in the past, the last being 12 years ago, which paralyzed his left side, but he got some of it back and could walk with a cane. He also had a mild heart attack about 15 years ago, which was treated with balloon angioplasty. Iwanted him to enjoy his final years, so I let him drive, and do his own things, etc. I am VERY REGRETFUL that I did not get him LIFE ALERT (or another similar product). I realize that sometimes when people have a heart attack, they do not know it, and cannot press the button, but I am still very regretful over this…..I don’t know how I am ever going to forgive myself for this…..please help! Thank you everybody, you are very helpful….God Bless You all…. Just for the record, he was found on the kitchen floor in the sitting position (on his bottom), with his knees bent, feet flat on the floor, and his head slumped down to his chest. One arm had an abrasion on it on the upper side of the forearm, as if he may have nicked it against the table or chair that he was near…. ANSWER: I completely understand that you are feeling guilty but you have to bear in mind that your father was a sick man with many other medical problems. His quality of life would be decreasing pretty rapidly at this stageanyway and it is best that he went quickly instead of being kept alive artificially, in pain and in hospital away from everything he knows. It was his time and instead of wallowing in guilt, you should work on preserving the memories you have of him. QUESTION: I don’t even know how I’m writing this, I’m in such shock….my father was found dead on the floor of his home? in a sitting position (on the floor), with his head slumped down on his chest, his feet on the floor and knees bent….they believe he had a heart attack, but we are awaiting autopsy results…has anyone ever heard of anything like this, or what he could have died from? I am in such grief I don’t know what to do…..for the record, he had a lot of health problems, as follows…..diabetes (controlled), coronary artery disease, hypertension (controlled), stage 4 kidney failure (not enough to require dialysis yet), and he also had atrial fibrillation, an irregular heartbeat. He had one mild heart attack 15 years ago, which wastreated with balloon angioplasty. He also had an umbrella put in his groin to prevent blood clots from traveling to the heart or brain. He also had 2 strokes, which left his left side partially paralyzed, but he was still able to walk with a cane. The last stroke was about 12 years ago. I am so sad, I can’t even believe I am typing this….he was 76 years old. Thank you. Thank you for your condolences….. ANSWER: Losing a loved one is undoubtedly one of the most difficult experienced people go through.I pray that you will be able to live again. No one can ever feel what you feel or experience the depths of your pain and anger that overwhelms you. You have a right to be sad, angry and to hurt because your father meant so much to you. I pray that you will be able to have joy and that you will bear no more sadness and pain. I pray that you will carry no more burdens and that you will be able to help the next person who crosses your path. I pray that you will forgive yourself and that youwon’t sentence yourself to eternal prison. I pray for your freedom right now. I pray that your father did not die in vain, but that you can let others know that they can make it through whatever they experience in life. If you need counselling, please find a counsellor because it can help. Take care as always. QUESTION: What’s so bad about guns? Oh yeah, forgot the delayed gastric emptying……he is on 2 medications for breathing (every 3-4 hours), oxygen as needed, prevacid 2x daily, bethanacol 4x daily, norvasc 2x daily, ipratroprium breathing tx for drooling!, he requires 3x daily g-button changes. To date, no one is willing to care for my child expect qualified licensed nurses. People are scared because last week he had a vagal episode after refluxing and his heart-rate fell to 33 and his o2 sat stayed at 84-87 for 2 hours (even on 10 liters o2!). He was nearly deadand it’s a good thing the nurse was there! He will grow out of a lot of this eventually, but in the meantime? ANSWER: I’m so sorry for all that you’ve gone through with your son. The chances of you getting SSI are very good. The process, regardless of how obvious your case seems, often takes quite a while. After filing, you’ll be sent to a doctor who works for the government in determining your child’s disability. After their report comes in, then it’s just a matter of a few weeks until you begin getting monthly payments. Call on Monday morning and get things started..the toll free number is 1-800-772-1213 or you can begin your application online by visiting Even if you’re denied, you can always file again, and hire an SSI attorney who will fight for you. Good luck, and my prayers are with you. QUESTION: OMG any1 know about back pain???? Please Help!!? Please please just take a minute i need all the answers i can get. I am taking 10mg of Lisinopril and 80mg of Diovan daily. My BP is usually 110/74 while on the meds. I have experienced SEVERE headaches whenever I forget my meds for several days, so I am afraid of discontinuing my medication. But I would like to conceive in the next few months (before the end of May), and my doctor’s appt. isn’t until the middle of May. I would like to try to discontinue the meds before I see the doctor, to find out if my BP is under control, since I have lost 20 lbs. and have increased my exercise and eating healthy. Any suggestions??? ANSWER: My main suggestion is DO NOT stop the meds! I am on lisinopril and another med, I have lost 85lbs in the last 8 months and my BP has not comedown….so don’t rely on weight loss alone. If you are to be taken off the lisinopril the chances are high that it will need to be replaced with another med. Don’t attempt it without medical supervision, it could be dangerous. You will need guidance regarding pregnancy anyway and you need the right advice from the doctor, not here. QUESTION: Does moderate drinking liquors reduces heart disease by 20 to 49%. ? Does moderate drinking liquors reduces heart disease by 20 to 49%. ? I was reading that moderate drinkers tend to have better health and live longer than those who are either abstainers or heavy drinkers. In addition to having fewer heart attacks and strokes, moderate consumers of alcoholic beverages (beer, wine or distilled spirits or liquor) are generally less likely to suffer hypertension or high blood pressure, peripheral artery disease, Alzheimer’s disease and the common cold. Sensible drinking also appears to be beneficial in reducing or preventing diabetes, rheumatoidarthritis, bone fractures and osteoporosis, kidney stones, digestive ailments, stress and depression, poor cognition and memory, Parkinson’s disease, hepatitis A, pancreatic cancer, macular degeneration (a major cause of blindness), angina pectoris, duodenal ulcer, erectile dysfunction, hearing loss, gallstones, liver disease and poor physical condition in elderly. ANSWER: Well, I suppose it depends on what you mean by moderate drinking, but I know that drinking can cause alcoholic dilated cardiomyopathy and can also lead to high blood pressure. Obviously, excessive drinking can also lead to a myriad of other disease states, but the aforementioned processes can result from average drinking in some people. I’ve been diagnosed since 12 and is under a gov doc since. I had my kidney biopsy done. Now I’m 17 and recently after researching, found out more about this disease though I don’t understand half of what all the websites are saying. Most of the websites have the same information though with all the medical terms I don’t comprehend them. I’m quite mad at my doctor for not explaining to me and my parents about it thus we have been misled into thinking its not serious. I’m unsure of how fast this disease progresses and if it’ll reach end-stage renal failure. Recently we’ve stopped going for my checkups and taking my hypertension medication as we hear it harms the liver at such a high dosage and I’m takingit for life. Are there other side effects? We tried asking the doctor about using fish oil but she turned us down thus we were upset with her. I feel like a experiment while she’s taking a “trial and error” approach to it. Will doing this affect the rate my disease progresses? ANSWER: IgA nephropathy is deposition of IgA immune complexes in glomeruli, manifesting as slowly progressive hematuria, proteinuria, and, often, renal insufficiency. Diagnosis is based on urinalysis and renal biopsy. Prognosis is generally good. Treatment options include ACE inhibitors, corticosteroids, and ω-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids. Most cases of IgA nephropathy can’t be prevented. If you have a family history of IgA nephropathy, talk with your doctor to find out if there are steps you can take to reduce your risk of developing the disease. Controlling your blood pressure is one of the most important ways you can help slow kidney damage from IgA nephropathy. You doctor may recommend changes in your diet —such as limiting your salt intake — to help manage your blood pressure. A low-salt diet can also help minimize fluid retention and swelling. Other dietary changes, such as reducing the amount of protein you eat and taking steps to decrease your cholesterol levels, also may help slow the progression of IgA nephropathy. Talk with your doctor about what’s right for you. Coping with IgA nephropathy can be challenging. But, you don’t have to do it alone. If you have questions or would like guidance, talk with a member of your health care team. You may also benefit from joining a support group. Such a group can provide both sympathetic listening and useful information. To find out about support groups in your area that deal with kidney disease, ask your doctor. Or, contact your local chapter of the National Kidney Foundation by calling 800-622-9010. QUESTION: Can someone help me prioritize these nursing diagnoses? 1. QUESTION: Does this sound like feline hypothyroidism, or something else? Trying to diagnose my cat before the vet does. I have the zillionth appointment today with my senior male feline. He is 16. He was diagnosed with CRF two years ago. Blood test two days ago shows everything within the normal levels (including phosphorus, glucose, liver, kidney) EXCEPT he is a little anemic. He is blind in the only eye he has–at the time his retina detached he was diagnosed with hypertension. He takes a pill to regulate that but his vision did not return. When he was first found to be anemic, he was also diagnosed with a red blood cell infection (yes, red blood cell infection – mycoplasma turicensis and another one that started with an hae…). He took an antibiotic for a month but has not been retested to see if it’s been cleared up. This weekend, he had diarrhea and was vomiting. His back legs are also weak. Today’s tests will be a T4 for thyroid specifically and possiblyxrays for some sort of GI disease/cancer. Can any of his symptoms be in line with a thyroid issue? Or could the mycoplasma issue be cancer related but the rest of his bloodwork was normal? For the diarrhea, they gave him some fluids that seemed to have at least temporarily helped him feel and “go” better, but his hind legs are still weak. Thoughts? (Prayers and miracles also welcome. I know he’s old, but if he can be made to feel better for a little longer, I’d love that.) ANSWER: Hypothyroidism is relatively rare in cats, and it is not considered fatal, although it can affect a cat’s quality of life and IT IS common in older Cats..but the vomiting and diarrhea really has nothing to do with hypothyroidism. This cat has lived a long life, be very happy for it, but also sense/find if he is in pain if you are going to be self-diagnosing too. Because if he is, you wouldn’t want him to suffer any longer either, of course? Symptoms of hypothyroidism are weight gain, dull coat and generallethargy..not vomiting, weak legs and diarrhea. QUESTION: Medical Benefits of Ramadan ? Medical Benefits of Ramadan by Shahid Athar, M.D. Ramadan is a month of self-regulationand self-training, with the hope that this training will last beyond the end of Ramadan. Thephysiological effect of fasting includes lower of blood sugar, lowering of cholesterol and lowering of the systolic blood pressure. In fact, Ramadan fasting would be an ideal recommendation for treatment of mild to moderate, stable, non-insulin diabetes, obesity and essential hypertension. There is a peace and tranquility for those who fast during the month of Ramadan.Personal hostility is at a minimum, and the crime rate decreases. Muslims take advice from the Prophet who said, “If one slanders you or aggresses against you, say I am fasting.’” This psychological improvement could be related to better stabilization of blood glucose during fasting as hypoglycemia after eating, aggravates behavior changes. Healthy adult Muslims should not fear becoming weak by fasting, but instead it shouldimprove their health and stamina. ANSWER: I am not Muslim but I do follow your writings and thank you for posting here. You are very informative. Some might grumble about your posts because it’d be a stretch to call them questions but I do believe (and hope) most would agree that it’s all ok. Best wishes to you. Therefore, Iencourage my Muslim patients to fast in the month of Ramadan, but they must do it under medical supervision. Healthy adult Muslims should not fear becoming weak by fasting, but instead it should improve their health and stamina. ANSWER: Studies conducted on Ramadan-type fasting (RTF) have shown that fasting affects human biochemistry. Such fasting results in an increase in serum lipids and uric acid, though the latter has no adverse health effects. Long term effects, such as an increase in HDL cholesterol and a decrease in LDL cholesterol, have been observed with Ramadan fasting. A decrease in blood glucose, actate and pyruvate, has also been observed, possibly indicating alterations in metabolic activities. Basal metabolism also slows down, and fat is used more efficiently during such fasting. During fasting, the liver responds with adaptive changes in metabolic activities. The increased activities of enzymes involved in the degradation as well as the production of glucose suggestthat RTF enhances nutrition and energy metabolism. There is no conclusive evidence whether the weight of an individual is affected positively or negatively by Ramadan style fasting. QUESTION: Kre-Alkalyn: GNC: Arnge Krush. Medical Questions?
