Peripheral Neuropathy and Diabetes Get Your Vitamin D Your skin produces this nutrient in response to sunlight. It may protect against nerve pain. When researchers from Britain’s University of Sheffield studied people with diabetic neuropathy, they found that those who had lower levels of Vitamin D also had more pain.

It’s hard to get the recommended 600 to 800 IU of vitamin D from food alone. You may need to take a supplement. In fact, one study found that people with diabetic neuropathy who took a supplement once a week had fewer symptoms after two months.
