Healthy Blood Sugar Allergies

Pythagoras recognised honey as a miracle food thousands of years ago.  He insisted on it as a principal food for the students of his philosophy school and he called in The Food of the Gods.

In more recent times and closer to home The Australian Bee Industry Council call it Australia’s Liquid Gold.

If you google the use of honey you’ll find that there isn’t much that honey isn’t good for.  From skin and hair products, removing internal parasites, inducing sleep, to my favourite – a mandatory item in your emergency food storage kit in your underground bunker.  Honey claims to be the answer to all our ills and at this time of year when everyone is looking for a miracle cure to eat away those extra holiday kilos there is even a honey diet.

Today I’m not adding to the 1001 amazing uses of honey (that will be another blog).  I’m going to stick to some facts about why Natural Honey straight from the hive is something you should include in a healthy diet at any time of the year.

Facts

It’s important to understand that the information below applies to pure natural unblended and unheated honey.  Bangalow honey meets all of these requirements.

Firstly let’s answer the big question for dieters.  Does honey have more calories than sugar because it actually tastes sweeter?

One tablespoon (21g) of sugar contains 81 calories where one tablespoon of honey only has 64 calories and yes honey is sweeter than sugar so you win again by reducing the amount of honey you use.

While that’s an interesting fact, all good dieters know that all calories are not equal. So what else does honey have to offer to the health conscious individual?

The international Glycemic Index on their scale of 0 – 100 rate pure honey between 42 and 58. This places it in the low to medium range where sugar ranges from 60 – 85 placing it firmly at the higher end of the scale

So what does all that mean? Food with low GI slow digestion and absorption, produces gradual rises in blood sugar and insulin levels and has proven health benefits for weight loss as they control appetite and delay hunger.

To add to this honey comes packed with vitamins and minerals. The vitamins present are B6, thiamin, niacin, riboflavin, pantothenic acid and certain amino acids. Then there are the minerals, calcium, copper, iron, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus, potassium, sodium and zinc.

So whether you’re on a weight loss journey or a health filled journey why not start replacing sugar with honey?   If you need help with the converting your recipes take a look at the site below:
