Blood Sugar Levels Wound Healing

Did you know that you can make homemade sugar-free powdered sugar right in your blender? Sometimes, you do need powdered sugar. It’s such a dilemma for someone like me that wants to limit sugar. What I’ve got for you today is a great solution for those recipes that there’s just no substitute for the powdered sugar.

You can make a sugar-free powdered sugar by blending xylitol until it’s a fine powder. What is xylitol? Xylitol is a substance that’s categorized as a sugar alcohol. It’s made from plants, either birch or corn, and is processed to become the product you buy in stores.

Yes, it’s processed. In general, I prefer foods that are as close to their natural state as possible. Yet I’m not one of those people who thinks all processed foods are the devil. I like xylitol because it has 40% less calories than sugar and it’s very low on the glycemic index, with a score of 7. This means it basically has no effect on your blood sugar levels. That’s what makes sugar so terrible for you, the effect it has on your body, and this is not the case with xylitol.

Xylitol does have its downfalls. It can cause gastrointestinal distress if eaten in large amounts. At least that’s what I’ve read. I’ve never had a problem with it nor has anyone in my family. It is also is toxic for dogs, so be extra cautious with where you store it and the baked goods you make with it if you have a fur baby.

I wanted to give you a little information about xylitol, but not make this whole post defending it as a natural sugar alternative. I’ve read a lot of information about xylitol on both sides and have decided it’s a great once-in-a-while sweetener to use. Go ahead and do your own research and decide for yourself if you’d like to use xylitol.  For me, I use it probably 3 or 4 times a year. As with all sweeteners, I think you can overuse it, so moderation is key.

I love it because it’s a 1:1 substitution for sugar and you can use it just like you would sugar in a recipe. And, if you need powdered sugar, you can turn it into your own sugar-free powdered sugar.  I used it to make these Vegan Lemon Cupcakes with Lemon Vegan Buttercream Frosting. Yowza! Stop by later tomorrow to get the recipe.

But let’s not get ahead of ourselves.  Yes, these cupcakes are dreamy. But today is about how to make sugar-free powdered sugar. It’s so simple; it’s going to take you less than 5 minutes.
