Blood Sugar Levels While Sick

GREENSBORO, N.C. -- A beautiful day to play at Country Park in Greensboro. Playground pals in yellow shirts run, laugh and play just as much as all the other kids. But there's one more thing. These kids have type 1 diabetes.

"Everything she puts in her mouth, she needs to have a shot for," says mom Emily Neely, of her 4-year-old daughter Ella. "She was diagnosed last year. Her behavior was great, but she was going to the potty a lot. I thought for sure it was a urinary tract infection." Doctors diagnosed Ella with type 1 diabetes and said her blood sugar levels were so out of whack, she was two days away from being in a coma.

Shannon Kelly's son Cooper was diagnosed at 17 months old. "We get up multiple times a night to make sure his numbers aren't too low because if they drop too low in the night he could die."

The parents are now like doctors in a sense, monitoring their child's blood sugar levels constantly, day and night. They've formed a playgroup with 11 kids with type 1 diabetes as a way to help support and learn from each other.

So, it's the disease that brought these families together and they're in it together. They call their team the "Super Littles" and will walk in an upcoming walk/run, sponsored by the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation and FOX8, to raise awareness and money for research.

The JDRF walk is April 25 in High Point. For more information or to sign up, visit .
