Blood Sugar Levels Natural Remedies

A wide variety of medications can affect blood sugar levels. This applies to individuals with or without diabetes. For those with diabetes, it is especially important to be aware of these medications as they might spur the development of abnormal blood sugar levels. For anyone who may take these medications, though, it is important to weigh the costs and benefits of their use.

Steroids

Steroids are used to treat an array of conditions including asthma, arthritis, auto immune disorders, including type, 1 diabetes, and allergies. According to the Cleveland Clinic, steroids work by decreasing inflammation and reducing the activity of the immune system. Steroids cause an increase in blood sugar especially in those with diabetes, and most likely if it is given in the form of a shot. The Diabetes Monitor explains that steroids drive up blood sugar in a similar way that stress hormones do. Steroids block the action of insulin and also act to cause your liver to start releasing extra glucose into your blood. Since steroids are blocking the release of insulin, your blood sugars rise.

Antibiotics

Antibiotics are commonly used to treat infections. With some antibiotics, there is a possible side effect of a low or high blood sugar. A study reported in “The New England Journal of Medicine” in 2006 found that the antibiotic gatifloxacin caused highs as well as lows in both diabetics and non diabetics.

Chemotherapy

The chemotherapy drug bortezomib, which is used to treat blood and bone marrow cancers, may also cause a rise in blood sugar levels, according to the American Cancer Society. With the use of chemotherapy, blood sugar levels must be monitored very closely as dramatic variations in blood sugars may hinder and slow the healing process and in some circumstances make the disease worse.

Health-e-Solutions comment: There are many other drugs that affect blood sugar levels, but this is a summary of the most common ones.
