Blood Sugar Levels Effects Psoriasis

Maintaining a healthy blood sugar level is important for everyone.  Sugar (glucose) is used by every cell in the body and our body has a very complex system to move sugar into your cells to be stored or used. Chronically elevated blood sugar can lead to insulin resistance, diabetes, heart disease and weight gain, just to name a few.  Keeping your blood sugar levels in check you will feel more energetic, it will help maintain a healthy weight, it will help stabilize yours mood, your memory will improve and you will better balance your hormones.

Follow these tips for a healthy blood sugar balance.

    Eliminate processed foods and refined sugar from your diet.  Consuming these foods spikes your sugar rapidly causing the body to respond by releasing large amounts of insulin. Eat foods that are low on the glycemic index — that is foods that release sugar into the blood stream slowly.  Vegetables, legumes, some fruits (berries, stoned fruits, grapes), Whole grains (oats, brown rice), nuts and seeds. Eat protein at each meal, along with healthy fats and carbs.  The protein and fat will slow down the release of sugar into the blood stream.  As well protein is satiating keeping you full longer which is why it is really important your first meal of the day includes a healthy source of protein. Eat foods with fibre — fibre helps to stabilize blood sugar by slowing the entry of glucose into the bloodstream, fibre will also help you feel full, helps with weight management, promotes healthy bowel movements and helps manage healthy cholesterol levels.  So eat up.  Veggies and fruit, oats,legumes, quinoa and brown rice are all great sources. Add cinnamon — cinnamon helps to balance blood sugar by stimulating insulin receptors. Cinnamon is also a powerful anti- oxidant, anti-microbial and has anti-inflammatory properties so you will benefit in more ways than one.
