I LOVE white rice but white rice is NOT a healthy food!

A vital part of staying healthy and losing/ maintaining weight is keeping your sugar levels constant throughout the day.

  • High sugar foods spike your blood sugar which means insulin needs to flood into your body. Insulin stores fat!
  • High sugar foods cause behaviour problems in children.
  • High sugar foods will give you mood swings.
  • They also put you at a high risk of getting diabetes.

So how can we tell how much a food will spike your blood sugar? Have a look at the . The Glycemic index  ranks foods on a scale of 1-100. The  consider anything that is 70 or more as high. 56-69 as medium and 55 and below as low.

To give you an idea of how bad white rice  is for you (89 on the glycemic index)- It will spike your blood sugar more than coca cola (63) , more than ice-cream(57) and more than a mars bar (65)!

There is a really simple solution and that is to eat brown rice which has allow glycemic index of just 50. Quinoa is another great option with the low glycemic index rating of just 53.

They are lovely but like any pre packaged food they have a number of questionable ingredients and the price is insane considering how cheap it is to make at home.

After a couple of mediocre attempts I found this combination of ingredients which is full of goodness and tastes even nicer than the packaged stuff.

Recipe

The below quantities serve 2 people as a side dish-

115 calories per person.

  • 35g brown rice
  • 25g quinoa- I used the  for the post photo but any type will do.
  • 3 cloves of garlic, chopped small
  • 1 red chilli, chopped small
  • 1/2 tsp onion salt
  • 1 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp cumin
  • half a lemon or lime
  • hand full fresh coriander, chopped
    Boil the brown rice for 5 minutes. Add the quinoa (check the packets to see cooking times. The reason I add the quinoa 5 minutes later is because the cooking time was 5 minutes less. This may be different if you have easy cook brown rice.) Put the lid on and cook for another 20/25 minutes or until rice is tender. add the freshly chopped garlic and chilli. Then season with onion salt, garlic powder and cumin. Serve and squeeze over lemon juice and sprinkle with chopped corriander.
