It’s important to be aware and understand your risks of kidney disease so that you can prevent future damage to your kidneys.

The risks of developing kidney disease are higher for people who have high blood pressure. People with high blood pressure can do damage to their kidneys and small capillaries over time.  People with diabetes and don’t do a good job at controlling their blood sugar levels experience the same hardship on their kidneys and those small blood vessels, hindering the kidney’s ability to filter the blood.

By maintaining healthy habits like proper diet and exercise, keeping-up with blood pressure medication, and managing your stress levels, you stand a good chance of reducing your risk for developing kidney problems in the future.

Same goes with controlling your blood sugar.  As a diabetic, it can seem like it’s not that big of a deal if you have high blood sugar or if your A1C levels are a little higher than normal.  But, if you strive to keep those levels low, it can pay off greatly in the long-run.

Quitting smoking can also reduce your chances of developing kidney disease, among numerous other illnesses.

Weight-loss provides immediate benefits to removing the pressure, both in filtering capabilities and the often-overlooked physical pressure from fat surrounding the organs.  Exercise in-general will help keep your blood surgar and blood pressure levels low.

Medications can also have a strong effect on kidney disease.  There are some medications that you should not take if you know you are prone to kidney disease or are already experience signs of kidney disease.

Early intervention is key.

If you take proactive measures in preventing the development of kidney disease, you are going to live a longer and healthier life.  Maintaining a diet for diabetes or high blood pressure is much easier than the special diet that is required for those who have advanced stages of kidney disease.  Talk to your doctor about the medications and steps you need to prevent kidney disease.
