Regular exercise helps your body lower blood glucose levels, promotes weight loss, reduces stress and enhances overall fitness and enjoyment of life. Talk to your diabetes health care team to learn how to adjust your insulin and diet or food intake to prevent low blood glucose levels while exercising. Carry some form of sugar with you along with some extra food. Carry your meter with you. Be prepared to stop and test your blood glucose levels during exercise should you feel symptoms of high or low glucose levels. Don’t exercise if you have very high glucose levels or are ill. Wear an identification bracelet. Carry a record of the names and amount of insulin you use and any other medications which you use regularly. Wear comfortable shoes and socks. Test your blood glucose before exercising. You may need extra food before you start. Stop exercising if you feel any pain or feel tired. Always check with your doctor before starting any exercise routine, especially if you have led aninactive lifestyle.
