As we gear up for the launch of the Science of Fat Loss, we are going to be giving you short extracts from each habit in the book. Here is a small extract from Habit 9 “Nutrition Timing”
So how do we force our body to burn fat when we exercise and even when we are not?
Eating fat enhances your body’s ability to burn fat. From a biochemical level a low-fat, high-carbohydrate diet doesn’t make sense. It simply doesn’t condition the body to be efficient at burning fat. Instead, it will ramp up the enzymatic machinery in your body so it becomes efficient at burning carbohydrates. Remember your body has a very limited capacity to store carbohydrates and it is very easy to reach that capacity from eating too much processed foods and the 5 – 11 servings of starchy foods recommended by the standard government food table.
Yes, a product could say low to zero fat on it’s packaging but the body doesn’t read or understand that packaging advice. Why? When the cells have all the glucose it needs, insulin, which is usually stimulated very highly in low-fat foods, promotes lipogenesis (conversion of carbohydrates to fats and mobilization of these fat into adipocytes) and it suppresses lipolysis, which is the release of fat from the adipose tissue.
It is interesting to note a normal blood sugar represents about one teaspoon of sugar dissolved in the blood of the human body.
When you realise something considered ‘healthy’ like freshly squeezed orange juice contains approximately 51 grams of sugar then you quickly realise why it is easy to become obese and diabetic in our culture today.
Lower fat diets can also have negative impacts on adipokines which impact fat loss. Adipokines are hormones released specifically from your fat cells. One such hormone, adiponectin which is a true fat-burning hormone that works to enhance your metabolism and increase the rate in which fats are broken down, curbing your appetite. Lower-fat diets lead to lower levels of adiponectin. When your body senses that there is plenty of fat in the diet, it is quite happy to give up what’s stored in your fat cells. Plus, with the ketogenic diet your fat burning hormones – glucagon, testosterone and growth hormone – are working at maximum efficiency whilst your fat storage hormone insulin is pretty much told to shut up and behave itself. This means that the pancreas can take a break from spewing out a ton of insulin.
When carbohydrate containing foods are digested, they are broken down into blood sugar (glucose) in the body. The more carbohydrates we eat, the more glucose is made. As diabetics know, high blood sugar is toxic to the body. Eating more fats and protein and less carbs causes our internal biochemical pathways to switch to using our stored fat for fuel instead of burning sugar. This switch produces ketone bodies while at the same time reducing blood sugar levels. As glucose drops and ketone body levels rise in the bloodstream, the heart, muscle and brain stop burning sugar and instead use the ketones as an alternative fuel. This is called being “in nutritional ketosis.”

In this habit I have explained exactly how a ketogenic diet works and what it looks like. I have also written about those that may not benefit from this approach and how they should approach Nutrient Timing. I have also talked about; breakfast, pre and post-training nutrition, recovery protocols and loads more.
