Somehow, the dog sensed that the child’s blood sugar levels were dangerously low. The dog alerted the mother, who was sleeping, and she rushed her son Peyton to the hospital. Tater Tot, who was adopted from Ruff Start Rescue, is a hero. From NY Daily News, A Minneapolis woman saved a pit bull mere hours before his scheduled death and the canine quickly returned the favor by saving her son’s life less than a week later. Christi Smith only planned to keep Tater Tot until she could find a home for him but the perceptive pooch became a permanent part of the family when he alone realized that Smith’s 4-year-old boy PeytonAnderson was not well, reported Fox affiliate KMSP. “He kept on whining and barking and running between the two of us,” Smith told the station. “I checked on him, and he was barely breathing.” Smith rushed Peyton to the emergency room where doctors reportedly found out the boy had dangerously low blood sugar. “He just seemed kind of weird,” said Smith. “He wasn’t really coherent — deliriously tired.” Isis Sanchez or the Blue Pearl Veterinary Clinic explained that canines’ exceptional sense of smell, which can be trained for bomb and drug detection, likely helped Tater Tot sniff out ketones, a compound that is often created when blood sugar is low.
